Nothing deflates the excitement of a new pair like realising the fit is off. The good news: with a sheet of paper, a pen and five quiet minutes in the evening, you can measure your feet accurately and order with confidence.
Measure in the evening
Feet swell slightly through the day, so evening measurements reflect your true wearing size. Stand on a sheet of paper with your weight evenly spread, trace around each foot, then measure the longest distance in centimetres. Use the larger foot — most people have one foot up to half a size bigger than the other.
Leave a thumb's width
For runners and everyday sneakers, aim for roughly a centimetre of space between your longest toe and the front of the shoe. Toes should be able to wiggle freely; the heel should feel held rather than gripped. Leather styles like derbies and boots will give a little with wear, while knit runners fit like socks from day one.
When to size up or down
- Between sizes? Size up for runners and down for snug leather styles.
- Wide feet? Look for a roomy toe box rather than simply going longer.
- Orthotics or thick socks? Measure while wearing them.
Still unsure? Returns are free
